Deductions

Manage the deductions that reduce an employee's net pay — both the statutory ones Soundial calculates for you and the voluntary ones you set up.

Deduction management is for payroll administrators.
PayrollDeductions

Statutory deductions (automatic)

PAYE, NIS, NHT, Education Tax, and HEART are calculated automatically on every payroll run using current Jamaican rates and tax bands — always in JMD, as required by the TAJ. You don't set these up; they apply to all eligible employees.

Statutory rates and thresholds are maintained centrally. You don't edit tax bands per company.

Creating deduction types

A deduction type is a reusable template — for example a health-plan contribution, union dues, or a pension scheme.

1

Go to Deductions

PayrollDeductions
2

Add a deduction type

Give it a name and choose whether it's a fixed amount or a percentage of pay.
3

Configure pension matching (optional)

For a pension deduction, you can set an employer match rate and a match cap.
A deduction type that's assigned to active employees can't be deleted — deactivate those assignments first.

Assigning a deduction to an employee

1

Open the employee

Go to
Employees
and open the employee's record.
2

Add the deduction

Choose the deduction type, set the amount (or confirm the percentage), and set start/end dates if it's temporary.
3

Confirm on the next run

The deduction is applied automatically on payroll runs while it's active.

Employee loans

Loans are recovered as recurring deductions. Record the loan with its principal and installment amount, and each payroll run applies the installment and reduces the outstanding balance.

1

Open the employee record

Add a loan with a description, principal amount, and per-period installment.
2

Track repayment

The balance decreases as installments are deducted until the loan is cleared.
Set an end date or installment that clears the balance cleanly so the final deduction isn't over-collected.
